Features

Tree Records To see an active register and to view tree files, go to the New Zealand Tree Register or Manitoba Tree Register.  An example of a single tree listing can be viewed here on tree record  HBR/210, whilst record AR/967 illustrates a group listing.  A broad range of information can be archived in the free-text tree notes field for each tree, including links to newspaper articles, other historical references (see MR/302 and AR/1007) and other trees within the register.

Search Records All data can be fully searched with search results being able to be sorted by various criteria (height, girth, champion tree score, region, species etc). Information on results tables can be viewed in a range of formats to cater to different user groups (map view, notes view, tree dimension view and street view, where applicable). A text search of tree notes is provided and numerical tree record numbers can be used in the quick search feature.

Access Levels The system supports multiple access levels providing for an administrator role (full access to everything), moderator roles (ability to approve information for public view), submitter roles (ability to submit data for approval) and access to the general public to view permitted files.

Online Tree Submission Tree recorders create an account and log onto the system to submit tree data. Tree recorders begin to compile a list of ‘My Trees’. Once submitted Auto alert messages are sent to selected administrator/s advising that new trees have been added. All new trees are initially hidden from view until verified/moderated by the system administrator/s.  This ensures that there is a robust validation process for information published on the internet.

Mapping Trees can be located on the map by either using a WGS84 lat/long or by entering the nearest street or road access and engaging the Google Earth Geocode feature. Users simply click and drag markers onto target trees to fine tune the location. Users are also required to provide a physical description of tree locations to support the map indicators   Note: Tree location information can be suppressed on individual tree records to avoid disclosing the location of sensitive trees.

Observations Each tree can have multiple observations (including those from historical records) and images associated with it, allowing users/administrators to build up a detailed historical record of each tree. You can see in this record NR/725 that observations go back to 1969. Historic data for any tree can be entered at anytime and it is automatically shown chronologically.  Even historical records taken from archived data and images can be created CR/1081 .

Image Management Thumbnail images are retained of files uploaded to the application by users. Original files are stored centrally and are referenced to the tree record number for ease of locating. Users with administrative access can upload original images  and manage data volumes by deleting those not required.

Sponsor Management The application supports the inclusion of sponsored banners where participants can support the register owner in specific regions. Banners show on tree records within a given region reflecting the sponsors support i.e. TSR/695 & CR/961. This provides register owners the ability to create a revenue stream for the administration of each register. These banners are managed by users with administrative access.

Imperial/Metric The entry of measurement data can be made in either metric or imperial formats. Other users can simply toggle between these formats depending on viewing preferences. Cookies record user preferences for return visits to the register.

Champion Tree Scores Trees receive a champion tree score based on the measurements loaded (using the USA American Forests formula). When trees are sorted by species they can be further sorted by the champion tree score, city, region municipality etc. Trees with multiple stems are retained in the database but receive a 0 champion tree score.

Customisation Whilst a generic format is provided with each tree register template, customisation of some features is possible. The loading of organisational banners and background wallpaper ensures the look and feel of the register aligns to the owners website. Various drop-down lists and help notes are able to be fully customised.
